6 Live Search Books
En décembre 2006, Microsoft lance aux Etats-Unis la version bêta de Live Search Books, qui permet de lancer une recherche par mots-clés dans les livres du domaine public scannés par Microsoft dans les fonds de grandes bibliothèques. Les premières bibliothèques partenaires sont la British Library et les bibliothèques des universités de Californie et de Toronto, suivies en janvier 2007 de celles de la New York Public Library et de l’Université Cornell. Microsoft compte aussi ajouter des livres sous droits avec l’accord préalable des éditeurs. Live Search Books permet de consulter les livres scannés avec les mots-clés surlignés. Par la suite, il sera possible de télécharger les livres dans leur entier au format PDF (portable document format). A ce stade, la base est beaucoup moins riche que celle de Google Book Search (Google Livres) et son moteur de recherche plus rudimentaire. Par contre, contrairement à Google, Microsoft n’a pas l’intention de numériser des livres sous droits sans l’accord des éditeurs. Par ailleurs, Microsoft participe à l’Open Content Alliance (OCA), une initiative lancée en octobre 2005 par l’Internet Archive pour créer un répertoire libre et multilingue de livres numérisés et de documents multimédia. La reconnaissance vocale regroupe l’ensemble des techniques permettant à l’ordinateur de reconnaître les mots énoncés par l’utilisateur. Ces techniques sont associées à celles de la synthèse vocale, qui permet à l’ordinateur d’émettre des sons correspondant à la prononciation des mots par l’être humain. Les recherches sur la reconnaissance vocale et la synthèse vocale débutent dès 1960.
